A Comparison of Phenotypic Root Characteristics in Local Eggplant Genotypes (Solanum melongena L.) Infected and Non-Infected with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melongenae

Abstract :The eggplant insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Solanum melongena L.); is an important vegetable species cultivated under openfield and greenhouse conditions in Turkey. In recent years, due to fungal disease in eggplant growing areas, yield quantity and fruit quality problems have been encountered. One of the mos t effective precautions agains t disease is to determine the genetic materials that are resis tant or tolerant to disease and evaluate them in the plant breeding programs. The number of breeding s tudies for forming a s trong root sys tem in varieties of eggplants is very limited in Turkey. The mos t important criteria that affect the performance in varieties of eggplant are the root s tructure and the ability of development under s tress conditions. This s tudy inves tigated 66 local eggplant genotypes agains t infection by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melongenae. Plants inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melongenae and non-inoculated insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(control); plants were subjected to a separate s tatis tical analysis. The Karabey F1 was used as the positive control variety. The root sys tem architectures parameters insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(total root length, the root surface area, the root volume, and the root diameter); were determined using the WinRHIZO program. The total root length ranged from 14.57 cm insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(G43-3); to 787.09 cm insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(G91);, the root surface area ranged from 5.20 cm2 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(G42); to 457.53 cm2 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(G91);, the root volume ranged from 0.10 cm3 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(G42); to 26.22 cm3 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(G128);, and the root dimeter changed 0.60 mm insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(G144); to 5.87 mm insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(G152);. When all the characteris tics that cons tituted the root canopy were evaluated together, the root traits of genotype G91 and genotype G113 were found to be s tronger and superior compared to the other local eggplant genotypes.Keywords : Eggplant, , Fusarium wilt, , root sys tem architecture, , resis tance, , Turkey
