Abstract : Retail price comprising tax is supposed to be one of the measures to reduce tobacco consumption which is one of the most important mortality and morbidity causes at global level. This study aims to investigate the effects of retail prices and affordability in Turkey on decreased cigarette consumption. In this study, the necessary time to earn one cigarette was estimated as workload of people with minimum wage. Correlation analysis between the necessary time and the amount of cigarette consumption showed a significant negative correlation of 92.1% Our results indicate that, the purchasing power of the target community rather than the price of cigarettes with or without taxes is more effective for tobacco control. Keywords : Tobacco Consumption, Cigarette Prices, Purchasing Power
