Thermally Induced Cationic Polymerization of 2-Ethyl-2-oxazoline by Benzyl Pyridinium and Anilinium Salts

Abstract :N-Benzyl pyridinium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(BP);, N-benzyl o-cyano pyridinium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(BoCP);, N-benzyl p-cyanopyridinium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(BpCP);, N-benzyl N, N-dimethyl anilinium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(BDA); and benzyl triphenyl phosphonium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(BTP); salts with bromide counter anion, thermal initiators for cationic polymerization, were synthesized and characterized. Their capability to act as initiators for the polymerization of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(EOZO); was examined. The postulated mechanism is based on the generation of benzyl bromide by the thermolysis of either BoCP or BDA that reacts with the monomer, EOZO. The polymerization proceeds via an oxazolonium bromide as the propagating end.
