Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains Isolated from Dogs with Otitis Externa

Abstract :The aims of this study were to isolate Pseudomonas aeruginosa from dogs with otitis externa insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(OE);, to determine the susceptibility of isolated strains to antibiotics, and to evaluate the incidence of the infection in the Aydın region. For this purpose, ear swab samples were obtained from 92 dogs with symptoms of OE infection and the samples were examined bacteriologically. Bacteria were isolated from 88 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(96%); of 92 samples but no isolation was performed on 4 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(4%); dogs. In total 93 microorganisms were identified. Among these microorganisms, staphylococci species were the most isolated one in number insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(43%);, followed by P. aeruginosa insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(17%);, Escherichia coli insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(11%);, Proteus spp. insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(9%);, Streptococcus spp. insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(9%);, Pasteurella spp. insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(3%);, Citrobacter spp. insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(3%);, Corynebacterium spp. insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(3%);, and Enterococcus spp. insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(2%);. Of the 16 P. aeruginosa strains examined, 13 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(81%); were sensitive to gentamycin, 12 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(75%); to penicillin G, 7 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(44%); to danofloxacin, 6 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(38%); to streptomycin, 3 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(19%); to ampicillin, 2 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(13%); to lincomycin, and 2 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(13%); to tetracycline. In conclusion, gentamycin and penicillin could be more effective for the treatment of OE caused by P. aeruginosa in the Aydın region.Keywords : Pseudomonas aeruginosa, otitis externa, dog
