Effect of exercise on some minerals, metabolites and enzyme activities in the serum of trained Arabian horses

Abstract :The exercise-induced variations of some biochemical parameters including calcium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Ca);, phosphorous insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(P);, iron insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Fe);, copper insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Cu);, manganese insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Mn);, selenium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Se);, zinc insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Zn);, sodium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Na);, potassium insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(K);, chlorine insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Cl);, glucose, urea, creatinine, lactate dehydrogenase insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(LDH);, aspartate aminotransferase insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(AST);, alanine aminotransferase insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(ALT);, and creatine kinase insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(CK); were assessed in the serum of 25 Arabian horses. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein 3 different times: before exercise, 5 h after exercise, and 18 h after exercise. Statistical analysis was performed using SAS insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(version 9.2; SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA);. Ca, Cl, glucose, and urea showed significant insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(P < 0.05); changes due to exercise. There was significant increase from before exercise to 5 h after exercise in urea concentrations while Ca and Cl concentrations significantly decreased. A significant ascending trend for Ca between 5 h and 18 h after exercise was also seen, while glucose and urea had a significantly descending trend. No significant time-based variations were observed for other variables. The results of the present study indicated that exercise could affect the value of some biochemical parameters, which could be used in future studies evaluating the health status of Arabian horses.Keywords : Arabian horse, trace minerals, electrolytes, biochemical parameters, exercise, dry climate
