Abstract :Özet: Bu çalışmanın amacı yirminci yüzyıl otobiyografi yazımındaki gelişmeleri incelemektir. Hızlı değişimlerin yaşandığı bu dönemde otobiyografi de yeni düşüncelerin ışığında hem nicelik hem nitelik açısından önemli değişikliklere uğramış, edebi bir tür olma yolunda büyük mesafe kaydetmiştir. Çalışmanın birinci bölümünde yirminci yüzyıl öncesi eserlerde insanın kendi öz yaşamına ait verdiği bilgilerin otobiyografik bir anlam taşıyıp taşımadığı tartışılmakta, hemen her döneme ait düşünceler bazı örneklerle verilmektedir. İkinci bölümde, artık insanın rahatça ‘ben’ diyebildiği yirminci yüzyılda daha bilinçli bir yazı türü olarak otobiyografinin kabaca üç dalga halinde geliştiği ve edebiyat dünyasına katkıda bulunduğu açıklanmaktadır. Sonuçta ise yüzyılın sonunda otobiyografi yazımının hız kesmediği, değişimler olsa bile, insanların öz yaşamlarını edebi bir dille aktarma edimlerinin bundan sonra da sürme eğiliminde olduğu vurgulanmaktadır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Otobiyografi, yirminci yüzyıl, Batı, tür, ben Contemporary Autobiography Writing Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the developments in autobiography writing in the twentieth century. In this era of rapid changes, autobiography changed a lot in the light of new ideas both quantitatively and qualitatively and gained momentum in the way to become a literary genre. In the first section of the study, it is discussed whether the information given by humans in the before-twentieth-century works bear any significance from autobiographical perspective. Ideas of almost every age are given with some specific examples. In the second section, it is explained that, in the twentieth century where one can easily say ‘I’, autobiography as a more conscious mode of writing developed roughly in three waves and that it contributed much to the literary world. Consequently, it is emphasized that even at the end of the century, autobiography writing continued with the same speed, and despite some changes, people would be inclined to relate their life stories in a literary form.
