Abstract :Multiple sclerosis insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(MS); is an immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system characterized by inflammation, demyelination, and neurodegeneration. It may lead to physical disability, acute neurological, and cognitive problems. The specific etiology of MS has not been clearly defined to date. One of the key factors that play a role in the pathogenesis of MS is oxidative stress, which increases inflammation and neurodegeneration. Myeloperoxidase insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(MPO); is one of the enzymes secreted by activated inflammatory cells and is produced by monocytes, macrophages, microglia, and neutrophils. At the same time, myeloperoxidase is one of the components of oxidative stress. MPO has been investigated many times in MS patients, but peripheral blood levels of MPO have been studied very few times. This study investigated serum MPO levels in MS, and the relationship of these levels with patients` age, disease duration, prognosis, annualized relapse rate insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(ARR);, EDSS scores, and disease-modifying drug therapies insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(DMT); used. The study included 50 MS patients and 50 healthy controls, and their demographic and clinical characteristics were determined. Serum MPO levels were significantly lower in MS patients than in the healthy control group insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(p=0034);. No significant correlation was found between MPO levels and patients` age, EDSS scores, disease year, DMTs used, and disease progression insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(p>0.05);. These results show that low MPO levels in MS patients have an important role in the pathogenesis of MS.
