Abstract :Aim: As a gold standard, culture is the method of choice for the diagnosis of urinary system infections. Nevertheless, a test that gives result in a short period of time is needed for the early proper treatment. Urine flowcytometer may be used for this purpose and it may be an informative test. In our study we aimed to find the correlations between urine flowcytometer results and bacterial culture in urinary tract infections for rapid diagnosis of urinary infections. Material and methods: Total of 3418 urine specimens belonging to patients admitted to hospital were evaluated for the presence of leukocytes and bacteria with the UF-100 flow cytometer Sysmex Corporation, Japan . The results obtained by the UF-100 were compared with the ones obtained by bacterial cultures of the same urine samples. The positive cultures’ identification and antibiotic susceptibilities were performed by Phoenix Becton Dickinson, United States of America .Results: Among 3418 urine cultures, 739 were culture positive 22 % . In urine flowcytometry the best cut-off values that correlated for bacteria were 3000/μL sensitivity = 19,37 %, specificity = 97,76 % and 21/μL for leukocytes sensitivity=57,65 %, specificity= 85,99 % .Conclusion: Although a test that provides result in a short time is needed, the UF-100 cytometer can not be used fort his purpose since it does not accurately predict the outcome of urine cultures. The leukocyte count in regard to urine flowcytometer is more reliable than bacteria count. A flow cytometric urinalysis analyzer operating in a time saving manner helps the clinicians get a trustworthy leukocyte count information prior to bacterial culture resultsKeywords : urinary tract infection, bacteriuria
