Abstract :Introduction and Objective: All cultures in the world have their own myths about breastfeeding false beliefs known as true . Breastfeeding myths can be seen as harmful practices because they interfere with successful breastfeeding experience of mother and infant. Knowing midwifery students’myths about breast milk and breastfeeding process, evaluation of positive or negative effects of mothers’on breast milk and breastfeeding, elimination of the ones that cause adverse effects will contribute to infant nutrition and health. The study was planned to determine midwifery students’thoughts about breast milk and breastfeeding myths as they will make breastfeeding counseling to women who are in pregnancy and postpartum periods and to community after graduation.Materials and Methods: Research was conducted as a descriptive study in Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Health Science Midwifery Department. The population of the study constitutes 256 students studying in midwifery department in 2013-2014 academic year. Sample selection was not done in research to be able to reach out to entire universe. 235 students participated in the research. Questionnaires were made using face to face interview method by researchers between February 20 and March 7 in 2004. The research data was evaluated in SPSS for Windows 14.0 software package using the percentage distribution method.Findings: The average age of students is 21±1.5. 97.4% of students are single and 62.1% of students live in city center. 93.2% of students believe in such myths that insufficient milk production is because of fatigue, inadequate fluid and food intake. 81.3% of students believe in such myths that mothers should wash their nipples each time before breastfeeding.Results: If midwifery students realize their own myths regarding breast-feeding process in their education period and if they provide health care services free from these myths in their professional work lives, they will contribute positively to protection, maintenance and development of mother, infant, family and community health
