Abstract :patients as well as the levels of social support received from their families. Method: The study was conducted between September 2014 and January 2015. While the population of the study consisted of 108 substance addicted individuals applying to the psychiatry outpatient clinic of a state hospital between October and December 2014, the sample consisted of 100 patients who agreed to participate in the study. In the study, patient introduction form, Perceived Social Support from the Family Scale and Self-Esteem Inventory were used. Results: It was found that the mean score obtained by the substance abusing patients from the Perceived Social Support from the Family Scale was 34.42±6.34 and their mean score for the Self-Esteem Inventory was 36.03±2.72. Additionally, it was revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between their mean score of the Self-Esteem Inventory and their occupations; however, the difference between the other socio-demographic characteristics and scale mean scores was not significant. It was determined that there was a significant correlation between their mean scores of Perceived Social Support from the Family Scale and marital status; however, there was no significant correlation between them and the other characteristics. Suggestions: It can be suggested to raise the awareness of families to increase the self-esteem and social support among substance addicted persons. D eveloping appropriate programs in social service institutions may be effective.Keywords : substance addiction, self esteem, social support, nursing
