Abstract :Purpose:The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of corset use on balance and muscle activation in stroke patients.Methods:Forty-four individuals were included this study, divided randomly in two seperate groups, corset group n=23 and without corset group n=21 . All patients received a physical therapy programme every workday for 2 weeks. The corset group, in addition to physical therapy, used an elastic lomber corset from getting up till going back to sleep. Static balance values of patients were measured with Tetrax Balance Systems TBS , dynamic balance was measured with Berg Balance Scale BBS and Functional Forward Reach Test FRT and Transversus abdominus muscle strength was assessed with stabilizer device Pressure Biofeedback Unit . The evaluations were made 3 times; before treatment, middle of treatment, and 1 and 2 weeks after treatment. Results:There was significant difference in favor of corset group for FRT, BBS and Tetrax WDI Weight Distribution Index after 2 weeks’ usage of corset p0.05 .Conclusion:We believe that short-term use of corsets in stroke patients may be added to the conventional physiotherapy program in stroke rehabilitation because it does not restrict trunk movements, is a constant reminder for trunk muscles, and increases awarenessKeywords : Balance, trunk, stroke, core stability, corset
