Abstract :Aim: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine skills in the drug administration by patients diagnosed with COPD or asthma who receive inhaler drug treatment as well as their rate of satisfaction.material and Methods: The study was conducted in the thoracic clinics of a university hospital and a public hospital in İzmir from March to June 2012. The study sample consisted of 84 patients. The data were collected using a patient information form, the inhaler satisfaction form and the inhaler drug use observation form.Findings: Of the patients involved in the study, 63.1% were diagnosed with COPD, and 36.9% were diagnosed with asthma, 52.4% had been diagnosed between 1 to 5 years ago, and 53.6% had been hospitalized 1 to 3 times. 57.1% used a metered dose inhaler, 36.9% used a turbuhaler, and 6% used a diskus inhaler. The rate of satisfaction with their devices was 40.5%. Patients’ mean scores for the ability to use inhaler devices were found to be 5.1±2.6 for metered dose inhalers, 6.8±2.3 for turbuhalers and 6.8±3.4 for diskus inhalers.Conclusion: In the study, it was seen that patients’ use of inhaler devices was moderate. Health professionals are advised to select the appropriate inhaler device for the individual patient and provide appropriate training for proper use of the prescribed deviceKeywords : COPD, asthma, inhaler devices, satisfaction
