Abstract :This review aims to give a new perspective on understanding the roles of the lungs in acid-base balance. The ability to diagnose and treat acid-base disorders is an important component in the practice of intensive care. PH regulation is critical for cell metabolism and function. The maintenance of acid-base homeostasis in the body involves the lungs, the kidneys, and a complex system of buffers. The principal function of the lungs in acid-base equilibrium is to regulate PaCO2. The ability of the lungs to quickly eliminate CO2 provides a buffering capacity two times greater than that of all other buffering components in the bodyKeywords : acid base equilibrium, acid base imbalance, respiratory acidosis
