Abstract :In the current study, two marketed formulations VELGUT® insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(combination of prebiotic and probiotics); and VIZYLAC® insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(probiotic only); were assessed for a protective effect against carbon tetrachloride insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(CCl4); induced chronic liver injury model in rats. Rats were randomly divided into four groups. The normal control group was treated with normal saline insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(C1); and CCl4 treated group was treated with 1 ml/kg intraperitoneal injection of CCl4 one time a day for 10 days followed by two times in a week for 49 days insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(C2);. Test groups composed of the oral treatment of VELGUT insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(1 mg kg-1); along with CCl4 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(T1); and oral treatment of VIZYLAC insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(4 mg kg-1); along with CCl4 insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(T2);. At the end of the treatment, various serum biochemical parameters like alanine aminotransferase insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(ALT);, aspartate aminotransferase, insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(AST);, alkaline phosphatase insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(ALP);, direct bilirubin, total protein, and albumin levels were measured. Serum AST, ALT, ALP, and direct bilirubin of the groups T1 and T2 were found to be significantly lower as compared to group C1. The level of total protein and albumin was improved in the groups T1 and T2. The level of MDA, glucose and cholesterol was significantly decreased insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(p<0.05); in the groups T1 and T2 as compared to group C2.Keywords : liver fibrosis, lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress, liver biomarkers, probiotics
